Supreme Sacrifice

I was walking along a beaten trail today just lost in the beauty of the day. The sun was shining, a pleasant breeze blowing, birds singing, and bees buzzing. A beautiful day for walking and contemplating life's ironies. And as I did, I came across a field with what appeared to be thousands upon thousands of people all dressed in black, as if they were having a funeral service.

Curious, I began walking toward the field and it's large gathering and as I got closer I noticed that these poor souls were indeed mourning a loss. There were people of all nationalities, races, and ages. Some weeping uncontrollably, while others stared blank and devoid of emotion, perhaps too shocked. Anxious to see who could have garnered such respect from so many, I gently waded my way through the sea of the thousands of mourners and finally made it to the front after what seemed like an hour.

I saw a figure cloaked in a hooded azure robe with strange emblems embroidered upon it's silken trim. I did not recognize the emblems or their symbolism, but I surmised that this person was someone of great importance. The cloaked figure was turned slightly to the left with the drape of the robe covering the body and it's large hood hiding the face so that I could not determine if it was a male or female. My attention turned from the mysterious figure and gazed upon the ornate gold coffin to the left of the figure.
I slowly approached the figure, who seemed to be standing motionless and gazing intently at the coffin.

I took a quick glance behind me at the crowd and noticed that oddly not one of them seemed to be facing the coffin. Instead they were all turned away with their backs to it. Strange I thought, especially for a funeral service. Now I was even more curious. I continued to approach the stranger in the robe who seemed to be awaking from the almost trance like gazing at the coffin moments ago. In a gracefully swift and fluidic motion, the figure pulled the cloak's hood and let it drape down the back revealing at last a serene and stoic man with a clean shaven face, light grey eyes, and sandy blonde curly hair.

"Are you lost, young man?"

This man looked young, but spoke with the voice of someone who's age defied his youthful appearance. "Uh, no I'm not really lost. I was just curious what was going on. May I ask who the deceased is?".

The man looked at the coffin again, but this time I could see the great sadness displayed in his stare. "This holds one who has many names and faces. Revered by all and sometimes feared. Many call this one Supreme Sacrifice."

He stares at the coffin a bit longer before turning his eyes to the crowd and again the sadness floods over his face as he stares at them with their backs towards him.

"Jesus?!", I shouted. "You have the body of Christ here?!" I asked the question, but in reality all I wanted to do was run because I thought I had stumbled across a group of some weird sect.

"No, young man. Christ gave the ultimate sacrifice and because of it we all are able to experience the presence of Supreme Sacrifice ".

He pointed to the crowd and went on to say that each of them had their lives touched by this Supreme Sacrifice in one way or another. Confused I asked him, "Why then do they not face forward? If this Supreme Sacrifice has touched them so profoundly, wouldn't it be more respectful to face the coffin and mourn the loss rather than turn their backs as if to shun his memory?"

"The Supreme Sacrifice is not a person, young man. It is Love. Once you are touched by it you are never the same. And once you turn your back on it, it dies."

Darry Taylor

The moral of this story is simple, love touches every aspect of all our lives and in many degrees. It can tear you down with the same amount of intensity as it uses to place you on top of the world. But if you fear it loneliness becomes your constant companion. And if you turn your back on it completely, it dies. Love fully and completely without fear or regrets.

Old Man Rising :excited:
My birthday is in 2 more days! Been going through some issues this past month, but for the first time in my adult life I am actually looking forward to celebrating this getting old nonsense. lol! Lots of whispering behind my back may have a little to do with it though. Surprise party maybe? :fingerscrossed:

Good to hear from you finally! I liked the story, had a wierd, symbolicness to it.

DID YOU SALVAGE YOUR NOVEL OFF OF YOUR OTHER COMPUTER?!? I MUST KNOW!

Thanks. No, never salvaged anything from the old Marilyn. I will have to redo it all from scratch, but I have most of it in my head anyway. At any rate, I had originally planned to make it an online novel, but I've decided that it's best to publish it through a publishing company that I currently have as a client. Hopefully that'll happen within the next year or so. Sorry to keep ya waiting, man. But hey :shithappens:, right?

Yeah. But think of it this way, now that you've got everything planned out, you can understand it more while you're writing it. Next year or so...I can wait for that. This time, I would have another computer, you know, someone who can back-up the original file.

I could do so if you would like? Just send every few 20 or fifty pages to me when you get done. Don't worry, I'm not a stealer person, I could beta-read it for errors and such, if you would like to, as you go along, or just when you get it finished. I have all the time in the world for the next three months, I'm out of school, yay :yahoo:

This is...stunning...

Might I have permission to repost with full credits and a site link to your DA page in my livejournal?

Several I know could use to read something like this right about now...

Sure. If it helps someone get through some degree of heartache with their sanity intact then post away. :) Believe it or not, I just wrote it this morning. Going through some issues myself.
